Route · from Ushuaia, Argentina

Two days of open ocean, then a world made of ice. The voyage most people mean when they say Antarctica: a sea crossing of the Drake Passage followed by five or so days among the channels, bays and colonies of the Antarctic Peninsula.

You earn this one. Leaving Ushuaia through the Beagle Channel, the ship heads south across the Drake Passage — roughly two days of open Southern Ocean, albatrosses wheeling off the stern, the water cooling degree by degree until the first iceberg slides past the window.

Then the Peninsula opens up: the Gerlache Strait, Neko Harbour, the narrow walls of the Lemaire Channel when ice allows. Days are built around zodiac landings and cruises, chosen each morning by the expedition team according to weather, ice and wildlife. It is the most flexible, most popular and usually most accessible way to stand on the continent.
